Charest Gives More Money for Public Transit a Day After Announcing Carbon Tax

QUEBEC (CP) – Quebec Premier Jean Charest has announced his government will fight emissions by giving more money to public transit.
Today’s announcement comes a day after Charest announced a carbon tax on oil and gas companies in the province to help pay for his Liberal government’s commitment to the Kyoto protocol.
Charest says his Liberal government will add another $130 million yearly over six years to improve bus, subway and commuter train use in Montreal and other municipalities, including smaller ones.
Municipalities will have to match the funds in order to qualify for the program.
The goal is to increase ridership on public transit by eight per cent over the next six years.
