Jun. 20--The award was presented by Hesperia Recreation and Park District board president Richard Hall during the district's regular board meeting at Lime Street Park Recreation Center last Wednesday. Star Editor Peter Day received the award on behalf of the newspaper.
The local park district nominated the newspaper for its continuing coverage of park district news events. A cover letter and newspaper clippings were included in the district's nomination packet.
Hall, district administrator Cal Camara and other board members thanked the newspaper for their contributions. Board member Mike Limbaugh introduced the award and said that Hesperia residents especially look forward to opening their Tuesday Daily Press newspapers so they can read the weekly Hesperia Star, which is included inside Daily Press subscriber's Tuesday edition.
Day said covering park district events is a win-win because the district and newspaper both serve the people of Hesperia. He also expressed gratitude for the good working relationship with district staff, especially Becky Lihme, a recreation supervisor who serves as news media liaison.
Joining Day in receiving the award were reporter Beau Yarbrough and office administrator Maria Bamba, who maintains the newspaper's listings that include the Recreation Activities compilation.
