San Jose Mercury News, Calif., Dennis Rockstroh Column: Action Line: Rainbow Halo Usually a Signal of More Rain

Posted on: Wednesday, 21 June 2006, 09:00 CDT

By Dennis Rockstroh, San Jose Mercury News, Calif.

Jun. 21--Q Today I saw a rainbow around the sun. Does this mean anything?

It was like something I'd never seen before. I loved it, but after it left a storm came in and it rained. Should we be concerned?

Alyson Key West

A Yes, Alyson, it often means that something is coming.

And yes, you should be concerned.

That is, if you don't have an umbrella handy.

These sun or moon halos are created when the light of the sun or moon passes through tiny ice crystals which act as a prism and refract the light.

It is a sign of things to come. It often signals that rain is on its way.

Q I purchased a marble table from American Leisure in April last year.

I have exchanged several e-mails and was told the manufacturer will replace the table.

However no one has responded to my e-mails with regards to specific time frame as to when the table will be replaced.

Hemant Bheda Saratoga

A I passed your complaint to the company and you pressed on with your questions.

It worked.

Your report back: "Yesterday American Leisure replaced the table. I want to thank you both very much for such quick resolution."

Q We have been having problems with Comcast since we moved in December.

When we moved we specified we wanted the same service we had before -- basic cable.

We got extended basic. I called before the first bill to let them know I was not planning on paying for extended basic. They told me "fine," but they weren't sending anyone out to disconnect it.

Two months later I am getting billed for it.

I called and was treated badly. I had to talk to two supervisors to get the bill worked out.

So I decided I really didn't like the way I had been treated and decided to get Dish Network. I called on the same day to disconnect.

Still I am getting bills.

When I ask for a supervisor, I am told it will be 30 minutes.

Later I see a man in my back yard with a ladder going up to my phone lines. He has no uniform on and his truck is unmarked.

In the process of using his ladder he trampled my Vidalia onions. These onions are not available locally.

I want these plants replaced or some compensation.

When I tried to call to discuss this with someone, I got their usual transfer and disconnect techniques.

Kristina Bell San Jose

A I sent Comcast your complaint and they are looking into their procedures. Meanwhile, Comcast has replaced your onions.
