3rd Some fillies that have been training sharply in the mornings and showing considerable promise make their debuts today -- in the same race, of course. This space generally discusses the day's featured race, not a maiden affair such as this. But a year from now, in retrospect, today's third might look as though it should have been the featured race, because by then some of these, such as Round Lake and Waterloo Slew, could have accomplished much. Round Lake worked a sharp five furlongs (1 minute, 0.22 seconds) June 14, with a final quarter-mile in 24.83 seconds, and galloped out six furlongs in 1:14.03 seconds. But Waterloo Slew could be quicker. On June 15, Waterloo Slew zipped three furlongs in company (with Ragin Gagin) out of the starting gate in 35.88 seconds, galloping out an additional furlong in 48.94 seconds. It couldn't have been any easier for her. Both Round Lake and Waterloo Slew could have a bright future; others in here, too, have flashed potential. But the immediate future's the concern, and in that regard, Waterloo Slew has the advantage. She's an attractive key for multi-horse investments, with Round Lake, Lunarlady, Kat Goddess and Chatte Noir.
8th OK, this is the day's featured race, and it's a good one, with several capable older horses competing over a mile. About 28 months ago, Breakaway was considered a strong Triple Crown possibility; that didn't work out, but he's tough at this level. Hammer Back, a Californian, makes his local debut; Double Again and Tap Tap like to win races. But Hiwayfourfortysix is the one to beat. In his last, he couldn't catch a very sharp front-runner who got a clear advantage, but he should have a better trip here.
1st In her debut, De Lovely finished last, 10th of 10. No problem: Today she could prove that some horses just don't excel at first impressions. De Lovely is much better than her debut might suggest. That was on turf last month at Churchill Downs. Since then, she has moved to the stable of trainer Mike Stidham, and today she'll wear blinkers. And now, as the radio man says, the rest of the story: She worked in company, and on even terms, with James Ready Magic, who's a two-time winner. She could be a key to the Daily Double, with, in the second Loushe On The Lead, Graceful Rain, Eagles Nest, Native Penny and Alette Lascalla.
