Jun. 21--LAKELAND -- Sam's Club isn't letting a little phosphate slime get in the way of its new $4.7 million store at 3530 Lakeland Highlands Road.
Construction has begun on the 128,000-square-foot location and a late winter or early spring opening is expected.
"It is what we call a medium-size store," said Eric Brewer, a community affairs manager for Wal-Mart Stores Inc. "It usually takes us about 10 months to a year from breaking ground to opening up."
Sam's is a division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and the only other Sam's in the county is located at 4600 U.S. 98 N.
News of the store's progress has been scarce in recent years when construction plans were put on hold because the site sits on top of reclaimed phosphate land.
The discovery of phosphatic clay (slime) in the soil in 2003 dampened the hopes of a southside store. But those hopes didn't die.
"Several times I had heard they weren't going to build at the site," said Jim Studiale, Lakel and's community development director. "They knew they had soil challenges early on and they have worked to resolve that. I think (the plans) went back to corporate and sat for a long time."
To get around the soil difficulties, the store will be built on pilings that will be pounded into the ground to create a grid to support the building's foundation. Lowe's was built using the same process.
