Jun. 25--A man swimming toward a buoy in a Stanly County lake drowned after he mysteriously slipped underwater Saturday evening and didn't come back up.
Emergency officials didn't release the man's name or say where he was from Saturday night. His family was at the beach when the drowning happened at 6:30 p.m. and during the recovery, said David Montague, emergency services director for Stanly County.
The man was initially swimming in a popular public beach area in Palmerville, but the buoy area was in an unmarked part of the lake. Witnesses told emergency officials, who recovered the body at about 9:30 p.m., that there were no signs of distress and it was still unclear Saturday night why the man went under.
