Jun. 26--THE PROBLEM
Andy Fields contacted the South Florida Sun-Sentinel concerned about tree clippings and debris he said Florida Power & Light workers left in an area behind his Mission Bay home west of Boca Raton.
THE BACK STORY
Fields said he contacted FPL to report the problem via the company's Web site. Mayco Villafana, spokesman for FPL, said under hurricane conditions which existed last fall after Wilma, the company's role is to clear lines and restore power. Debris removal is the responsibility of local government. FPL tried to follow up with Fields in January and February, but did not reach him. On Thursday, FPL called Fields and left a door card at his home explaining FPL's position, Villafana said.
The county's Solid Waste Authority sent an inspector to Field's home and offered to help after the Sun-Sentinel called on Thursday, even though the group is not responsible for the debris, said Joanna Aiken, community service coordinator. In the months after the storm, someone dumped a sofa in the area, which Solid Waste workers will remove as a courtesy, Aiken said. The area is so overgrown with weeds, Field's homeowners association may have to help clear the area, so Solid Waste can get to the debris and help Fields and his neighbors, Aiken said.
Fields, who said he feels caught between FPL's and Solid Waste's cleanup policies, offered the Mission Bay Homeowners Association number to Solid Waste with hopes that the debris would be removed soon. Sun-Sentinel Watch will report updates on the clean-up progress.
