More Commercial and Residential Development Proposed for Canyon Rim

Jun. 27--TWIN FALLS --The rim overlooking the Snake River Canyon is like ocean-front property in south-central Idaho.
At a City Council meeting Monday night, council members, residents and developers discussed how to manage development on this sought-after shoreline. The discussion evolved from a public hearing about EHM Engineers' request to annex 25 acres on the canyon rim.
The annexation will allow EHM to build the Pillar Falls development for commercial, residential and hospitality uses.
Although the development is one of many vying for the city's approval, it is also a fresh reminder that the rim is eroding like the rock it's built on.
"We have got one shot at keeping the canyon wall," said Glenda Dwight, vice mayor of Twin Falls. "And this is it, so we need to be mindful of that in our decisions."
The City Council approved EHM's request, with one change. Pillar Falls must allow a public trail along the development's rim.
"That trail has been one of the best things that has happened to Twin Falls," said council member Greg Lanting. "And I do not want to lose the rest of that property."
The proposed design of Pillar Falls would create an 800-foot area along the rim.
But some residents say Twin Falls is losing more than walking trails.
"The canyon, I think, is what makes Twin Falls stand out from other towns," said Jan Meyer of Twin Falls, who was walking her dog on the Canyon Rim Trail.
"But sometimes, it seems like people just don't care about it anymore … like they think there's a canyon like it in every town."
