Jun. 27--CARRBORO -- A Carrboro man shot and seriously injured his cousin, then killed himself Sunday night in the parking lot of the Abbey Court apartment complex on Jones Ferry Road, police said.
According to Capt. Joel Booker of the Carrboro Police Department, the men were arguing over rent money before the shooting.
The two were roommates at the Dominion Ramsgate apartment complex on N.C. 54, but had run into each other at Abbey Court while visiting an acquaintance, Booker said.
Police withheld both men's names Monday while relatives were notified, but he said he expected to release the names today.
The shooting happened about 9:43 p.m. After the discussion over rent money, one man initially walked away, but then returned holding a gun. Booker said the man shot his cousin in the stomach, then shot himself in the head. A third person, the brother of the man shot in the stomach, was also there, Booker said.
The man with the gun was pronounced dead at the scene. The cousin he shot was in serious condition Monday at UNC Hospitals, Booker said.
Martin Toledo, 24, lives in the building closest to the shooting. He said he has lived in the complex just over a year and it usually seems safe. However, Toledo said he would like to see more of the security guard who roams the complex at night.
"[In] my opinion, there has to be more security here," Toledo said.
The complex's property manager, The Tar Heel Companies of North Carolina, referred questions to its attorney, who could not be reached for comment.
