Jun. 27--Atlanta Gas Light has created a new fund in Macon to support local charitable organizations.

Today, AGL Resources Private Foundation presented a check for $20,000 to the Community Foundation of Central Georgia to establish The Atlanta Gas Light Fund. Atlanta-based AGL Resources is the parent company of Atlanta Gas Light.

"We are passionate about the community where we live and serve," said Paul Leath, the gas company's regional manager for Middle Georgia.

The company plans to make annual contributions to the fund, he said.

Community Foundation president Kathryn Dennis said she looks forward to working with Atlanta Gas Light.

"This is very exciting for us," Dennis said. "They are establishing a permanent fund and will match their time with their resources."

While Atlanta Gas Light already donates "thousands of dollars to this community each year," this is the first one set up with the Community Foundation, Leath said.

Distributions from the fund will be designated toward three areas: * K-12 in public schools as well as public and private colleges. * Energy assistance programs for low-income residents and elderly people. * The environment, conservation, green space and air quality issues.

Leath, Dennis and Chip Cherry, CEO and president of the Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, will oversee distributions from the fund, Leath said.

Atlanta Gas Light is the largest natural gas distributor in the Southeast, according to its Web site. It provides delivery service to more than 1.6 million residential, commercial and industrial customers in Georgia.

The Community Foundation was founded in 1993 by a group of residents interested in encouraging philanthropy and strengthening communities, according to its Web site. Since then, the foundation has awarded more than $17 million in grants through its donor-advised, unrestricted, designated, field-of-interest, scholarship and agency endowment funds.
