Philadelphia International Airport Gets High Marks in Satisfaction Study; Passengers Give PHL Excellent Grades in J.D. Power's Annual Report

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) ranks 2nd among large airports in overall passenger satisfaction, according to the J.D. Power and Associates 2006 North America Airport Satisfaction Study released on June 29th. PHL had an overall score of 703 on a scale of 1,000, just three points behind top-ranked Las Vegas McCarran International Airport. The average score for large airports was 692.

J.D. Power defines large airports as those with at least 30 million annual passengers. In 2005, PHL accommodated an all-time best 31.5 million passengers. In previous years of the study, PHL was grouped with medium-sized airports, some of which had as few as 10 million annual passengers.

The study is based on responses from passengers who flew between January and May and rated airports by answering nearly 30 questions in eight categories: Airport accessibility, check-in process, security checkpoint, terminal facilities, food and beverage, retail services, baggage claim and immigration/customs control. PHL scored highest among large airports in immigration/customs control and retail services. More than 370 passengers rated PHL in the study.

"It's terrific news for us and is a reflection of the growing recognition of PHL as one of the great airports in the nation," said Charles J. Isdell, the City's Director of Aviation. "We are delighted with the results of this survey. They are a tribute to the thousands of people who work here every day."

J.D. Power, a California-based global marketing information services firm, conducted the survey in conjunction with Aviation Week, an industry publication.

The Philadelphia Airport System is owned and operated by the City of Philadelphia and is composed of Philadelphia International Airport and Northeast Philadelphia Airport. The Airport System is a self-sustaining entity that operates without the use of local tax dollars. It is one of the largest economic engines in Pennsylvania, generating an estimated $14 billion in spending to the regional economy and employing a workforce of nearly 34,000.
