Derailment Fills Chicago Subway With Smoke

At least 76 people were treated and taken to Chicago hospitals Tuesday after the last car of an eight-car CTA train derailed causing a smoky tunnel fire.
Heavy smoke was reported in the subway tunnel at 5:09 p.m., said Noel Gaffney, a spokeswoman for the Chicago Transit Authority. A portion of the Blue Line, which runs between downtown and O'Hare International Airport, was shut down and remained closed throughout the evening rush hour, affecting thousands of commuters.
CTA President Frank Krusei said material under the rail car caught fire between the Grand and Clark stops, filling the tunnel with thick smoke, the Chicago Tribune reported. Passengers, many covered in soot, were evacuated by emergency exits and evaluated by paramedics on the street above.
Some received oxygen and most of the injuries appeared to be smoke inhalation, fire officials said.
Our concern is getting the customers safely evacuated and making sure they get treated and get home, said CTA spokeswoman Wanda Taylor.
