Museum to Display Old Nuke Train Cars

Several White Train railcars that once transported nuclear warheads across the United States are headed for public display in Amarillo, Texas.

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad crew has hauled the cars to the Amarillo Railroad Museum, where they will be restored to their original white color, the Amarillo Globe reported Tuesday.

The newspaper said the train, which was operated by the U.S. Energy Department’s Office of Secure Transportation, shipped nuclear warheads assembled in Amarillo to military weapons depots across the country.

The cars were originally painted white to protect weapons against the heat of the sun. The government, which shipped Navy nuclear weapons by rail from 1951 to 1987, later used different color schemes to thwart possible attacks and protests.

The train was dubbed the White Train or the Death Train by some, the newspaper said.
