TOPIC: Several companies want to prove Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) technology can work in the western United States, according to an article by The Associated Press. Although IGCC plants are more expensive to build compared to conventional plants, industry experts say IGCC plants operate more efficiently and save costs on additional pollution control. IGCC technology turns coal into a gas that is burned in a turbine to make electricity. Pollutants are removed before the gas is burned. Industry experts also suggest that in addition to burning the gas it could be converted to ultra clean diesel and aviation fuels through the Fischer-Tropsch process. Incorporating a Fischer-Tropsch unit would allow the power plant the choice to produce both electricity and diesel fuels or which ever is most economical at the time.
