NORTHERN SKY RESEARCH (NSR): Government and Civilian First Responders Propel Satellite Emergency Relief Use; Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Via Satellite Market to Reach $469 Million By 2010

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 July 2006, 12:01 CDT

NSR today released its newest market survey and forecast report: "Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity via Satellite." The report provides an in-depth analysis of demand trends for the disaster recovery and business continuity via satellite markets in all regions over the next five years. The report forecasts are segmented by service and equipment type, including narrowband and broadband mobile services, VSAT services, and transponder leases for fixed satellite services.

The awareness of communication needs in times of disasters has reached perhaps an all-time high worldwide with three major events in the last five years: the terrorist attack on the New York World Trade Center in 2001, the devastating Indian Ocean Tsunami in December 2004 and Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005. The aftermath was public outcry focusing on the insufficient preparation of response agencies with respect to communications means.

"The ubiquitous nature of satellite communications provides a compelling case for strong growth in disaster recovery, but a positive side-effect is the uptake of satellite products and services for business continuity as more customers anticipate network failures and implement backup and redundant communication solutions," stated Claude Rousseau, analyst of NSR and author of the report. "Many recently introduced emergency and back-up solutions from vendors signal the importance that satellite services are gaining across various segments of the market," Rousseau added.

The primary characteristics that disasters and outages share is their unpredictability, so planning for the best solution to quickly recover network communications and continue operations is far from an exact science. The only sure thing is that action is required in the least amount of time, and many redundant satellite systems provide assured access for a speedy recovery and seamless continuity of operations.

The report estimates that constant growth over the period 2006 to 2010 will be driven by increased unit deployments for mobile and fixed narrowband and broadband services in all markets. Strong revenue growth will also be driven by emergency planners in government and civilian agencies, pre-procurements of equipment and diversified network path needs in the enterprise space.
