July 29, 2006
ROCKLAND – The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding $728,156 toward replacement of the Rockland-based Governor Curtis ferry, a lawmaker announced Friday.
U.S. Rep. Tom Allen said the money is part of $4 million in federal funding for replacement of the ferry, and the state has bonded $2 million for the project as well.
The Governor Curtis is some 40 years old and connects the city with several Penobscot Bay island communities. The new ferry will be capable of carrying 250 passengers and about 20 cars.
