The event was a collaborative effort of the UNCF and American's Marketing and Human Resources departments and American's African American Employee Resource Group. In attendance were Maurice Jenkins, Senior Vice President- UNCF; Diane Stephenson, Area Development Director-UNCF; and Dr. John Waddell, incoming president of Paul Quinn College. Dr. Waddell surprised American and the UNCF with a $1,500 donation to the campaign.
"American Airlines is to be commended for stepping up to help these victims of Hurricane Katrina get the college education they need," said UNCF President and CEO Michael L. Lomax. "At a time when a college degree is a minimum requirement for almost every good career, the hurricane could have not only derailed these young people's education but affected the rest of their lives as well," Lomax said. "American's commitment to helping them will play an important part in keeping their education and careers on track."
American Airlines, a founding member of the oneworld(R) Alliance, has been a longstanding UNCF partner for more than 26 years, supporting the organization's fundraising efforts and the nationally televised Annual Evening of Stars event. Additionally, the airline serves 25 of the communities in which UNCF's member colleges and universities are located.
The campaign is just one of a number of events taking place around the country to support the UNCF Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund. In addition to today's event, American Airlines' employees around the country are hosting a variety of fundraising activities to support the campaign. Airline employees can make their own personal contributions by payroll deduction. Also AmericanGiving, an independent American Airlines employee giving program, will match dollar for dollar up to $20,000 from a general AmericanGiving fund established for Hurricane Katrina Relief. To date, the campaign, which began July 1, has raised more than $18,000.
