JACKSON, Mich., Aug. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Customer demand for power on the Consumers Energy system hit a record for the second day in a row today and the utility asked customers to continue to reduce their electricity use until the heat wave lifts.
Even with customer conservation, the demand for power on the utility's system reached an all-time record high of 8,994 megawatts from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. today. That broke the previous record of 8,790 megawatts set from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday.
"We appreciate the efforts our customers have made to reduce their power use over the past two days and thank them for their assistance. Their efforts truly have made a difference," said John Russell, president and chief operating officer of Consumers Energy.
"We ask them to continue to conserve power until the heat wave lifts. We have adequate power supplies. However, if each customer takes a few steps to conserve power, that will help us ensure the stability of the system and reliable service to all of our 1.8 million customers during this heat wave."
Tips on reducing electricity use are available at the "Heat Alert" banner on the Consumers Energy website: http://www.consumersenergy.com/.
Consumers Energy, the principal subsidiary of CMS Energy, provides natural gas and electricity to nearly 6.5 million of Michigan's 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties.
