Terror Threat at London Airport Creates Travel Problems at Canadian Airport

Posted on: Thursday, 10 August 2006, 09:00 CDT

TORONTO (CP) - An alleged terror plot in London, England began to cause flight delays at Canadian airports early Thursday.

British police said they have thwarted a plot to plant bombs in carry-on luggage on up to 10 flights bound for the United States. At least 20 people were arrested.

Authorities immediately began enforcing strict new regulations banning most hand baggage and virtually all liquids on British flights.

Air Canada will follow the same security measures, said spokesman John Reber.

The heightened security caused long lineups to form at Air Canada's international desk at Pearson International Airport in Toronto.

The lineup extended outdoors as passengers waiting to board flights were told they were not allowed to carry any liquids or gel-based products in their carry-on bags.

That included toothpaste, bottled water and alcohol. Exceptions were being made for baby formula and prescription medication approved by Air Canada security.

In addition, all duty free services at the airport were closed.

Some passengers were seen on their hands and knees taking liquids out of their carry-on bags and placing them in their main luggage.

Air Canada says passengers can expect delays both at check-in and boarding and that travellers should arrive early and exercise patience.

One flight from London's Heathrow's airport to Toronto left on time early Thursday, but Reber said another 11 flights from London to Canada would be at least an hour late.
