Solar System Products Manufacturer, Learning Resources, Welcomes Idea of Adding New Planets to Solar System

Even though it means revamping several Solar System products, Learning Resources, a manufacturer of hands-on educational products for the classroom and home, likes the idea of adding new planets to the Solar System, which was proposed today by the International Astronomical Union.
"Anything that sparks excitement about science, math, and technology in U.S. children is tremendous," says Carl Benoit, Learning Resources editorial director and former national science consultant. "We need more students to think about a career in these important subjects and today's proposed addition of new planets to the solar system will have children and their parents and teachers talking about space science as the school year begins.
Benoit added that the little sentence he learned as a kid to remember the planets, "Mary's violet eyes make John stay up nights proposing," will definitely have to change.
"As far as revamping our products, we recently had to revise our food and nutrition products to reflect the new U.S. Department of Agriculture's food pyramid and were able to get products to market quickly," says Benoit. "Educational content is dynamic and constantly changing so we need to be flexible in reacting."
The company currently has four Solar System products on the market - Giant Inflatable Solar System, Solar System Floor Mat, Solar System Stamp and Planet Quest(TM) Game - and will be introducing a Solar System puzzle in 2007.
The International Astronomical Union (IAU) proposed today a new definition of a planet and, as a result of the new definition, three new planets will be added instantly to the solar system. The three new planets are Ceres, Charon and 2003 UB313, currently nicknamed Xena. The IAU will vote on the proposal on August 24.
