Transport Canada Relaxes Security Rules Allowing Some Duty-Free Purchases

TORONTO (CP) - Transport Canada is relaxing duty-free purchase rules starting tomorrow, which will allow most passengers to buy booze or perfume before boarding their flight.
But there are still restrictions in effect for flights to the U.S. and U.K.
While sales will be allowed to resume for passengers travelling elsewhere, they still won't be able to have any liquids, gels or aerosols in their carry-on luggage.
A spokeswoman for Transport Canada says the rules were changed after evaluating how the new security procedures could stay in place while still allowing duty-free stores to operate.
Passengers on flights to the United States and the United Kingdom will be able to buy duty-free items but will have to transfer them to their checked bags or pick up the items from the airline at the end of their flight.
For other international flights, passengers will get their duty-free purchases after they've gone through the boarding gate.
The new security measures led to a sharp drop in sales at duty-free stores, and some airport retailers in Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Calgary have shut operations since the ban was instituted.
