Boston Globe Appoints New SR VP of Production Operations

The Boston Globe today announced the appointment of Robert F. Burns as senior vice president, production operations, effective September 11. Mr. Burns will be responsible for all newspaper production and commercial printing for The Boston Globe. The position reports to Mary Jacobus, president and general manager of The Boston Globe.

Mr. Burns joins the Globe from the Newspaper Agency Corporation, publisher of The Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret Morning News, where he was senior vice president of operations.

Prior to this position, Mr. Burns worked at Knight Ridder for 23 years in a variety of senior newspaper production and operations roles, including vice president/production for Philadelphia Newspapers, Inc.; vice president/operations for The Charlotte Observer; and vice president/operations at the Detroit Newspaper Agency and the Detroit Free Press.

He has extensive experience in managing all aspects of daily operations from pre-press, printing, inserting and transportation; as well as process improvement and staff performance. Earlier this year, Mr. Burns completed leading a major project that involved the construction and start up of an $89 million newspaper plant and office complex in Salt Lake City for MediaNews Group. The plant became fully operational last May.

Mr. Burns' newspaper career began at the Miami Herald in 1975. Prior to joining the Herald, he served in the US Navy as a Lieutenant, and a maintenance officer and navigator aboard the destroyer USS William V. Pratt. Mr. Burns, 53, holds a M.S., Administration from George Washington University and a B.S., Engineering from U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis.
