Summary

New 2005 dietary guidelines

New dietary guidelines emphasising increased consumption of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains were introduced in January 2005. Nine servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended daily. The guidelines recommend that less than 10% of calories should come from saturated fats, with fat making up no more than 25-30% of total daily calories. The guidelines emphasise physical activity and calorie control. Americans are asked to get a minimum of 30 to 60 minutes of moderate exercise per day. While the old guidelines asked Americans to aim for a healthy weight based on Body Mass Index (BMI), the new guidelines recommend (for moderately active people between the ages of 31 and 50) 2,000 calories per day for women and 2,400 to 2,600 for men.

Year of the whole grain

Whole grains took centre stage in 2005 when the U.S. Department of Agriculture urged Americans to eat three servings or more of whole grains daily in The 2005 Dietary Guidelines and the new "MyPyramid.gov" food guide. Americans currently eat only one serving a day. Whole grains received favourable media coverage throughout the year, including an endorsement from popular talk show host Oprah Winfrey. On her TV show on 3 May 2005, she said, "I am such a believer in whole grains!" introducing a segment on whole grains.

Back in September 2004, General Mills had made news when it announced that all of its breakfast cereals would now be whole-grain based. The company increased the whole grain content of some of its cereals including Trix, Golden Grahams, Lucky Charms, and Rice Chex. Cereals such as Cheerios, Wheaties, Total, and Wheat Chex were left unchanged due to their historically high whole grain content.
