The New York Times and The Paradies Shops, an Atlanta-based airport and hotel retailer, announced today the opening of The New York Times Bookstore at the Delta Air Lines Terminal in La Guardia Airport. This is the second joint bookstore venture for The Times and Paradies. The companies announced their exclusive licensing agreement in early 2005 when The Times granted Paradies a license to develop and operate Times-branded bookstores in airports, including the right to sell Times merchandise.
"We are delighted to work with The Paradies Shops and Delta for the opening of our first New York area bookstore," said Cristian Edwards, president, news services, The New York Times. "In collaborating with Paradies and Delta, The Times is able to provide our readers, and the visitors to New York, with the most sophisticated access to breaking news and to terrific books."
"The Paradies Shops is very excited to offer The New York Times Bookstore to the traveling public at La Guardia Airport and especially in the Delta Terminal," said Gregg Paradies, president and CEO. "With the New York Times brand, we are creating more than a bookstore by offering customers many unique and special features in the airport stores; from the online components and the plasma screen TV, to specialty gifts and, of course, a selection of books featured on The New York Times best-seller list."
"As the largest airline serving New York City, Delta greatly values our relationship with The New York Times and The Paradies Shops," said Joanne Smith, Delta's vice president of marketing. "We are excited to see the long-awaited vision for this bookstore become a reality, which will make the travel experience to and from New York City more informative and entertaining for our customers."
The New York Times Bookstore will provide travelers with access to news and features from The Times and NYTimes.com, including: computer terminals where the customers can log on to The New York Times Web site; a plasma screen television showing excerpts from current news and features from The Times; and a selection of gifts and specialty items with The Times logo. Additionally, the store will provide an area for children's books.
"On behalf of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the La Guardia Airport community, I congratulate The New York Times and The Paradies Shops on the opening of The New York Times Bookstore, a welcome addition to our award-winning airport concessions program," said Bill DeCota, Port Authority director of aviation.
