HARRISBURG, Pa., Sept. 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Women, Infant and Children (WIC) participants in the Farmers Market Nutrition Program still have time to redeem checks for fresh, nutritious foods, said Agriculture Secretary Dennis Wolff today.
"WIC participants should take advantage of the upcoming harvest season to get a variety of fresh foods at local farmers markets," Wolff said. "Apples, broccoli, cauliflower and squash are just a few of the fruits and vegetables that are now in season and will be available through the fall."
Until the program closes on Nov. 30, eligible older adults and WIC participants with children ages two through four can redeem checks for fresh produce at participating farms, farmers markets and roadside stands.
Income-eligible older adults and WIC participants receive four checks totaling $20 to purchase Pennsylvania fruits and vegetables. Statewide, there are more than 850 participating farmers at 791 farm stands and 173 farmers markets.
Checks may not be used for any processed foods such as jams, honey, nuts, cider or baked goods. The program does not cover citrus or tropical fruits such as bananas, oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, tangerines, pineapple, mangos or other crops that are not grown in Pennsylvania.
