Sonus Mulls Acquisitions in Mobile and Video

Posted on: Thursday, 21 September 2006, 06:00 CDT

Softswitch vendor Sonus Networks Inc is looking at a return to the acquisition trail after a few years' absence, considering companies that could beef up its offering in mobile and video service enablement.

"We've built the core VoIP switching capability for our fixed-line carrier customers and, as broadband makes its way out to the edge of their networks, we're adding access services as a Class 5 module in the same box," said CEO Hassan Ahmed. "We're now starting to see wireless [i.e. cellular] carriers like Cingular move to VoIP for cost savings on roaming and long distance."

Cellular/mobile and video are still emerging markets for his technology, he argued, but in three years' time they'll be mainstream and, with the advent of broadband mobile technologies such as HSDPA and EV-DO Rev A, the two will have converged in services such as mobile TV.

Chelmsford, Maryland-based Sonus sees its main competition coming from traditional voice suppliers like Alcatel/Lucent, Nokia Siemens Netyworks, Ericsson or Nortel rather than IP players like Cisco, which despite its strength in carrier routing, has not made any inroads in IP voice switching in that space, Ahmed argued.
