NDP Urges Federal Government to Implement National Transit Strategy

OTTAWA (CP) - The NDP is calling on the federal Conservative government to implement a national transit strategy as part of any plan to tackle climate change.
Toronto MP Peggy Nash and NDP transport critic Peter Julian say Ottawa has done nothing but re-announce past commitments, like $900 million for transit promised in the 2005 budget.
Nash has introduced a motion calling on the government to create such a strategy in consultation with cities and communities and to provide stable, predictable long-term funding.
Nash says Canada is the only G-8 country without a national transit program.
Julian says the Tories consistently voted against new funding for public transit while in opposition.
Nash says Ottawa needs to take advice from the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, the Toronto Board of Trade and the Canadian Urban Transit Association.
