Miller Brewing Company, America's oldest major brewer, added 11 medals to its trophy case this past weekend at the Brewers Association's annual Great American Beer Festival. This marks a major milestone for the brewer, which since 1996 now has won an impressive 105 awards between both the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup, more than any other large brewer and more than Anheuser-Busch and Coors combined during that period.
"We're truly honored that our peers in the brewing industry continue to recognize our relentless devotion to the promise our founder made 151 years ago," said Dr. David Ryder, Miller's head brewmaster. "Frederick Miller was committed to delighting beer drinkers with 'confoundedly good beers' made with 'uncompromising quality.' His vision continues to inspire us today. To receive so many awards at this year's Great American Beer Festival is truly gratifying."
The Great American Beer Festival was held in Denver September 28-30, boasting the biggest selection of beers ever gathered together at one time in the United States. Miller walked away with three gold medals, four silver and four bronze in the 25th annual competition that featured 450 brewers and more than 1,600 beer brands.
Notably, the company's oldest brand, Miller High Life, received a silver in the American-Style Premium Lager category. And, Miller swept the American-Style Specialty Lager category, winning the gold with Mickey's Malt Liquor, the silver with Icehouse and the bronze with Olde English HG 800.
Other Miller winners were:
Gold
• Leinenkugel's Creamy Dark, American-Style Dark Lager
• Red Dog, American Lager or Cream Ale
Silver
• Milwaukee's Best Light, American-Style Light Lager
• Leinenkugel's Sunset Wheat, Herb and Spice Beer
Bronze
• Frederick Miller's Classic Chocolate Lager, Herb and Spice Beer
• Henry Weinhard's Private Reserve, American Cream Ale or Lager
• Southpaw Light, American-Style Light Lager
Through more than 150 years of innovation and brewing excellence, Miller has built a broad portfolio of award-winning beers that capture approximately 18 percent of the U.S. beer market. Miller beers have won 105 medals -- more than twice as many as its major competitors -- at the biannual World Beer Cup and annual Great American Beer Fest since 1996, when the World Beer Cup debuted. Miller's flagship brand, Miller Lite, is the great tasting, less filling beer that defined the American light beer category in 1975. The company also brews smooth, golden rich Miller Genuine Draft using a unique cold-filtering process that Miller introduced in 1985. Miller's oldest brew is Miller High Life, the champagne of beers. Miller imports Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Pilsner Urquell and Foster's, and it offers regional craft brews from the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company and the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company. Near-premium beers include Milwaukee's Best Light, Steel Reserve, Olde English 800, Mickey's Malt Liquor, Icehouse and Sharp's, a non-alcohol brew. Miller also offers the Sparks line of caffeinated alcohol beverages. Miller is a wholly owned subsidiary of SABMiller plc, the world's second largest brewer.
