Drivers Should Pay Higher Parking, Congestion Fees to Reduce Gridlock: Rae

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. (CP) - Liberal leadership candidate Bob Rae says drivers will have to pay higher parking fees and congestion charges if Canada is to reduce gridlock and pollution.
Rae made the comments Friday morning in response to a question on public transit after a speech in Mississauga, Ont.
Rae, one of the frontrunners for the federal Liberal leadership, says cities will have to look at imposing congestion charges on drivers in clogged urban areas - much like the one in place in London, England.
But he says the higher cost of driving - with increased fuel costs and parking fees - should be offset by an income tax cut.
When drivers pay the true cost of transportation, Rae says more might turn to public transit and reduce gridlock.
Rae is battling it out with Toronto MP Michael Ignatieff to lead the federal Liberals.
