Plug Power Continuous Run GenSys(R) Systems to Be Commissioned at NASA Glenn Research Center
Posted on: Monday, 23 October 2006, 12:00 CDT
LATHAM, N.Y., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Plug Power Inc. , a leader in providing clean, reliable on-site energy products, today announced that the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio will commission eight next generation GenSys(R) systems.
The units, which are expected to become operational in November, will provide grid-connected power for portions of the lab facility for aerospace research and development. Projects carried out within the facility include testing of materials, coatings, seals and airfoils for space vehicles, as well as advanced technology development to improve aviation safety.
NASA has been developing and using fuel cells as part of its space shuttle programs since the 1960s. Through the one-year field trial, officials at NASA Glenn plan to demonstrate to the public an emerging technology associated with clean power.
"Working with NASA Glenn represents an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the performance and durability of our next generation GenSys systems. We continue to believe that field testing is the only way to truly understand customer requirements and characterize product performance," said Mark Sperry, Plug Power's Chief Marketing Officer.
The installation will provide the opportunity to demonstrate Plug Power's latest product improvements, including an enhanced stack membrane and new fuel processor reactor design.
This project is being funded by the Ohio Department of Development's Third Frontier Fuel Cell Program, which provides grants to support the growth of Ohio's fuel cell industry through collaborations between research organizations, businesses and higher education institutions.
