Telkonet Launches First Building-Wide Energy Management and Control System

Posted on: Tuesday, 24 October 2006, 09:00 CDT

Telkonet, Inc. (Amex:TKO), the leader in providing in-building broadband access over existing electrical wiring, today announced that it has completed the installation of the Telkonet Smart Energy system, an innovative energy management and control system, at The Octagon, a 500-unit luxury, eco-friendly apartment complex on New York's Roosevelt Island. The Telkonet Smart Energy system measures the amount of energy generated from solar panels mounted on the property's roof towers and, using the Telkonet iWire System™, it transports the collected data over the building's internal electrical wiring, eliminating the need to run costly dedicated cabling.

Becker and Becker Associates of Fairfield, CT, developer and architect of The Octagon, installed 240 solar panels capable of generating up to 50 kilowatts -- enough to power common areas, including lights, mechanical systems and elevators. The solar panels, which constitute the largest photovoltaic array in Manhattan, will reduce the building's electricity costs and demand significantly, enabling The Octagon to become more energy efficient.

Bruce Becker, President of Becker and Becker Associates and Managing Member of The Octagon LP, commented, "Educating building users about energy use and conservation is a key aspect of sustainable development. Telkonet's success in designing and building our energy management system exceeded our expectations towards this end."

Telkonet's energy management and control system enables the energy output from The Octagon's solar panels to be monitored remotely and on-site, by building management as well as the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). NYSERDA awarded The Octagon $250,000 in funding to support the installation of the electricity generating solar panels, with the funding being dependent on the project meeting specific performance criteria. To collect the funding from NYSERDA, The Octagon has to demonstrate how much energy is being generated from the solar panels.

The Telkonet iWire System is an integral component in The Octagon's quest to meet this requirement. Microwave Satellite Technologies, Inc. (MST), a subsidiary of Telkonet that provides a suite of bundled quadruple-play and energy management services, installed data capture devices on the solar panels that are designed to measure the solar irradiance, air temperature and wind speed -- all of the environmental conditions that determine the solar panels' efficiency and power output. In combination with the data capture devices on the solar panels, the Telkonet iWire System, effectively utilizes a building's internal electrical infrastructure to enable full-scale Internet and network access from any power outlet.

Within The Octagon, Telkonet's iWire System also creates a local area network (LAN), allowing the building owners and NYSERDA to access real time data from the solar panels. The measurement devices simply connect to the Telkonet LAN via a Telkonet iBridge™ interface unit, which is plugged into the roof's power circuit. The Telkonet Smart Energy system completely eliminates the need to run structured wiring from the basement communications area to the roof, saving The Octagon tens of thousands of dollars in man hours and materials.

Frank T. Matarazzo, President, Telkonet/MST, said, "We are taking the initiative to get ahead of increasing energy demands in the major metropolitan MDU and commercial real estate markets by investing in and providing advanced energy management and control solutions like the Telkonet Smart Energy system. This is the first large scale project of this technology and it is providing significant benefits at a much lower cost as well as functionality that gives building owners, managers and power authorities, access to real-time energy data from anywhere, anytime and allowing them to address any energy needs immediately."

About The Octagon

Located on Roosevelt Island, The Octagon Tower, one of New York's most significant architectural landmarks, was built as an island retreat in 1841 with a dramatic eight-sided octagon rotunda. The Octagon has been restored to how it appeared more than 100 years ago, with a reinvention of a seven-story monumental spiral stair that serves as the residential development's centerpiece. Flanking the Tower are two residential wings, where the old hospital wings once stood. For more information, please visit www.OctagonNYC.com.

About MST

MST, a subsidiary of Telkonet Inc., designs, installs, and maintains satellite-based communication systems for major corporations. Through its NuVisions brand of services, MST offers a true quadruple-play package, including cable programming, Voice over Internet Protocol telephone (VoIP), high-speed Internet access, and WiFi services to multi-dwelling unit properties in New York and New Jersey. About Telkonet

Telkonet develops and markets technology for the transmission of high-speed voice, video and data communications over the existing electrical wiring within a building. The revolutionary Telkonet iWire System™ utilizes proven powerline communications (PLC) technology, which enables the delivery of commercial high-speed broadband access from an IP "platform" that is easy to deploy, reliable and cost-effective by leveraging a buildings existing electrical infrastructure. The building's existing electrical wiring becomes the backbone of the local area network, which converts virtually every electrical outlet into a high-speed data port, without the costly installation of additional wiring or major disruption of business activity.

The Telkonet iWire System can be installed rapidly and offers a viable and cost-effective alternative to the challenges of hardwiring and wireless local area networks (LANs). Telkonet's products are designed for use in commercial and residential applications, including multi-dwelling units and the hospitality and government markets. Applications supported by the Telkonet "platform" include but are not limited to: VoIP telephones, Internet connectivity, local area networking, video conferencing, closed circuit security surveillance and a host of other information services.
