GiraSolar Group Sponsors UBC Space Elevator Team
GiraSolar, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: GRSR) (FRANKFURT: L2I) is pleased to announce that DutchSolar’s continued sponsorship of the UBC Space Elevator Games yields promising results for the team.
On Oct 20th and 21st, eighteen students from the University of British Columbia participated in the second annual Space Elevator Games in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
Steve Jones, 2006 Captain of the UBC Snowstar team, stated: “This was made possible with your support and we are extremely grateful. The solar cells that you contributed were an essential part of our climber and allowed us to create a climber with an extremely high power density. At only 12kg the climber contains 414 5″ mono-crystalline solar cells. The team is excited about 2007 and development on the 2007 entries began before the 2006 competition had even occurred. Our high power density gives us an early edge for 2007 and we hope to move quickly towards the increased benchmarks. We are confident that this team will continue to lead in development of this technology for the 2007 games.”
The team received extensive media coverage including newspapers (The Vancouver Sun, The Province, The San Antonio Express), television (Global TV, CTV, BBC, Discovery Channel, PBS), radio (CFAX, CKNW) and online (MSNBC, New Scientist Space). This was the second year Dutch Solar sponsored the team. It was represented on the t-shirts of the 18 members of the competition team, on their website as well as through a large banner that was placed at the X-Prize cup — an event with 20,000 spectators.
Besides the UBC Snowstar Team, the GiraSolar group sponsors the Ege University of Izmir in Turkey in their attempts to build the fastest solar race car. GiraSolar hopes the Ege team will be able to enter international large distance solar races soon. In recent test races the GiraSolar race car performed very well and the company will report back on this challenging venture when verifiable results are in.
The GiraSolar group sponsors these university teams — applying solar energy in innovative ways — yielding the group new insight in diverse technical matters and innovative ideas for solar application.
