WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- International President Warren S. George has imposed an immediate temporary trusteeship of ATU school bus Local 1181-New York, NY. The International President has taken this action in order to "assure the performance of collective bargaining agreements or other duties of a bargaining representative," as stated in the ATU Constitution.
"In light of the fact that the two top officers of the local have stepped down from office as a result of federal indictments, I have determined that the local union must be trusteed in order to assure that the members of Local 1181 continue to be provided with the best possible representation," said George.
At George's request, the ATU General Executive Board voted to authorize the trusteeship this morning. George subsequently appointed ATU International Vice Presidents Tommy Mullins and Bob Baker as co-trustees of the local.
According to the ATU Constitution, the trusteeship will be temporary until a hearing is held to determine whether or not it should be made permanent. That hearing is required to take place within 30 days.
George made the decision to trustee the local after Local 1181 President Salvatore Battaglia agreed to a leave of absence from his position as local union president following an indictment on federal charges yesterday.
