Research and Markets: 2006 Research Available on Alcatel , Ericsson, Huawei and Motorola and Other UMTS Radio Network Controller Products

Posted on: Monday, 27 November 2006, 09:00 CST

Research and Markets has announced the addition of UMTS Radio Network Controller product research to their offerings. These reports, written by an objective 3rd party, contain insight and analysis of the product or service strengths and weaknesses, lists buying criteria and how the product or service fares in each category, and also provides a comprehensive table of product or service metrics and specifications. These reports are useful for purchasers who need to evaluate products or as a source of competitive intelligence for vendors.

The following reports are now available:

Alcatel Evolium 9140 (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45914)

Alcatel's offers operators a serviceable RNC with reasonable Node B support and BHCA capacity. But its poor use of space and limited interface options may give operators pause until a new ATCA-based platform emerges.

Ericsson RNC 3810 (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45916)

Ericsson's RNC 3810 sports best-in-class Erlang capacity, solid BHCA performance, and a host of deployments. But will this proprietary platform continue to hold back the advances of up-and- coming ATCA-based approaches?

Huawei BSC6800

Huawei continues to rattle the cages of major UMTS competitors. Its six-cabinet RNC offers market-leading Erlang and Node B capacity. Unfortunately, scaling to this level comes at the cost of substantial floor space.

Lucent Flexent RNC (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45918)

The Lucent Flexent RNC lays claim to a strong IP data platform -- including early support for Ethernet. Unfortunately, the merger with Alcatel darkens its future prospects as portfolio rationalization looms.

Motorola RNC 5000 (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45919)

Limited success selling its UMTS UTRAN solution to the market has led Motorola to look toward Huawei as a partner. Future joint R&D between the two will bring new products to market. In the meantime, Motorola goes to market with Huawei kit.

Nokia WCDMA RNC (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c43861)

Capacity enhancements bring the Nokia WCDMA RNC in line with the competition. While addressing its most egregious shortcomings, the upgrade still fails to take the product to the top of the class.

Nortel RNC 1500 (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45920)

Sale of Nortel's UMTS UTRAN portfolio to Alcatel essentially means the end of the line for these systems. New innovation may draw on Nortel's UMTS skills -- but improvements will likely accrue solely to future Alcatel Lucent platforms.

Siemens Communications RN-750 (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reports/c45922)

The Siemens RN-750 brings respectable, if not smashing, capacity, supporting rollouts of UMTS Node B systems. A replacement based on ATCA is in the wings, but will the joint venture with Nokia mean the end of the line?
