December 2, 2006

NEW DELHI – A foot bridge collapsed onto a train in eastern India on Saturday, trapping passengers in one carriage.

The 150-year-old bridge at the Bhagalpur station in the eastern state of Bihar, was being dismantled when it collapsed onto a train passing underneath,

Some 12 people were still trapped in the crushed carriage and 14 others were rescued and taken to hospital, said local government administrator Viplav Kumar.

Some rescuers used cranes to lift slabs of concrete. Others pulled away debris and rubble with their hands.

A new bridge had been built and the old one was being taken down, eastern railways spokesman Majumdar told the CNN-IBN news channel.

Railway Minister Lalu Prasad ordered an inquiry and suspended two railway engineers.
