Screening Machines Get More Modest

Posted on: Wednesday, 27 December 2006, 12:02 CST

New X-ray passenger screening machines headed for U.S. airports will no longer display detailed body parts to airport screeners.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration had the screening machines modified to address concerns by the American Civil Liberties Union and other critics, USA Today said Wednesday. But now some critics say the machines don't see enough.

You don't see fine detail, Robert Gould, a radiology professor at the University of California, San Francisco, told the newspaper. It's conceivable to me that (the modified machines) would miss plastic explosives.

The TSA has said the machines will be used on passengers who choose an X-ray over a pat down and require additional screening after the metal detector screening.

The machines will be tested at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and some other airports, USA Today reported.

We aren't endorsing this particular technology, we're testing it, TSA spokeswoman Ellen Howe told the newspaper.
