– Jan. 1: An Indonesian plane disappears in stormy weather after issuing distress signals during a two-hour flight from East Java to Manado.

– Oct. 29, 2006: A Nigerian plane plunges into a savannah near Abuja airport during takeoff. All but nine of the 105 passengers and crew on board are killed, including Sultan Muhammadu Maccido, the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslims.

– Sept. 29, 2006: An executive jet collides with a Gol Airlines Boeing 737 over the Brazilian Amazon, causing the larger plane to crash killing all 154 aboard. The smaller jet lands in the dense jungle without harming any of the seven people on board.

– Dec. 8, 2005: A Southwest Airlines flight skids off a runway at Midway Airport in Chicago during a landing, killing a 6-year-old boy who was inside a car crushed by the plane.

– Oct. 22, 2005: A Bellview Airlines plane crashes soon after takeoff from Lagos, Nigeria, killing the 117 people on board.

– Sept. 4, 2005: At least 149 people, including 47 on the ground, are killed when an Indonesian jet crashes in a residential neighborhood in Medan, the country’s third largest city.

– Aug. 23, 2005: At least 41 people die when a TANS Peru flight tries to make an emergency landing during a storm. It splits in two on impact.

– Aug. 14, 2005: A Helios Airways plane crashes near Athens, Greece, killing all 121 aboard. The pilots failed to properly regulate the cabin pressure, causing the crew to pass out.

– Feb. 3, 2005: A Boeing 737 Kam Air flight from Herat, Afghanistan, crashes into the mountains near Kabul because of bad weather, killing all 104 on board.

– Jan. 3, 2004: Three minutes after takeoff, a Flash Airlines flight, mainly carrying French tourists back to Paris from an Egyptian resort, crashes into the Red Sea. The crash, caused by difficulties in switching on the plane’s automatic pilot, kills all 148 passengers and crew on board.
