LAUSD

ACTION: The Los Angeles teachers union rejected an offer by the Los Angeles Unified School District that included $210 million to reduce class sizes over six years.

WHAT IT MEANS: The Dec. 20 offer proposed to spend $10 million toward class size reduction in 2007-08 and $20 million in 2008-09, $30 million in 2009-10 and so on until $60 million in 2012-13. The deal would have used the money in areas most in need to lower class sizes.

WHAT’S NEXT: The teachers union rejected the deal because it wants specified class-size caps and reductions in district bureaucracy, which were not included in the offer.

IN BRIEF

The City Council approved a $27 million settlement to be paid by the Port of Los Angeles to LAXT Petroleum Coke.

In 2003 the City Council denied an extension of LAXT’s lease at the port that would have allowed it to continue operations until 2032. Following this, LAXT filed a $400 million lawsuit against the city.

The $27 million settlement will be paid from port revenue, not taxpayer dollars, and stipulates that the LAXT must vacate port property by the end of March. Here is a quick look at action taken this week by local governmental agencies and how it might affect you:
