Youngstown UPS Worker Featured on Company’s 2007 Calendar

Jan. 2–YOUNGSTOWN — Thousands of letters of thanks are submitted to United Parcel Service each year from customers appreciative of the service they received.
In 2006, UPS selected 12 stories from those letters to appear in its 2007 calendar. One of these stories highlights Corinne Nickells, a Youngstown UPS Freight employee and customer service representative.
This year’s calendar celebrates the 100th anniversary of UPS, founded by Jim Casey when he was 19, writes Mike Eskew, chairman and chief executive officer at UPS, in the calendar.
Casey wanted to offer the best service possible to his customers, and through the calendar, UPS employees and their stories of service are honored.
“We usually don’t focus on service [in the calendar]. It’s usually just landscapes or drivers standing in front of the Eiffel Tower,” said Ronna Branch from UPS public relations.
But this year a change was made, and employees such as Nickells are showcased.
Nickells is in charge of the Things Remembered route. Locally, Things Remembered has three stores: one each at Southern Park Mall, Boardman; Eastwood Mall, Niles; and Shenango Valley Mall, Hermitage, Pa. Nationally, Things Remembered has more than 600 stores that Nickells and her drivers deliver to.
Things Remembered, a retailer of personalized gifts, sent UPS a letter expressing how pleased the company was with Nickells’ service, Branch said.
She was chosen from more than 400,000 UPS employees to appear in the calendar that more than 1.4 million people will receive, Branch said.
Nickells, in the foreground, and five city drivers, in the background, appear on the calendar’s April page.
Common problems that Nickells runs into are deliveries not being permitted to be made during certain hours, and, she said, there is one mall that will not accept on-site deliveries. Instead, the deliveries must be made at an off-site location.
Even when situations get difficult, Nickells has a positive outlook.
“My mother taught me to do the best in the situation,” Nickells said.
Sometimes, Nickells said, people are upset, but the employees at Things Remembered are always thankful and supportive of her duties and her drivers.
“They understand that some things are out of my control,” Nickells said.
Things Remembered has honored UPS Freight twice with its annual Partnership Award in 2004 and 2005.
Nickells also attends Things Remembered customer appreciation dinners.
