UK Organic Farmers Refute Minister's Claims

Organic farmers in the UK have hit back after a government minister claimed there was no proof that organic food was healthier than normal food.
The Soil Association, an organic farmers' organization, upholds that there is a difference between the two, stating that despite a lack of research into the healthy effects of organic food, it does offer a healthier option for consumers and is better for the environment than conventional food.
The statement comes after the UK environment, food and rural affairs minister, David Miliband, said that eating organic food is a "lifestyle choice" and that non-organic foods should not be considered as second-rate or inferior.
The Soil Association claims that sales of organic products rose by a third in 2005, compared with the previous year. However, in an interview with The Sunday Times, Mr Miliband said that organic food still represents only around 4% of the UK's total farm produce.
