Sarin Lays on the Charm Over Essar
January 10, 2007
VODAFONE boss Arun Sarin today hopes to curry favour with Indian commerce minister Kamal Nath in a meeting to discuss its Pounds 9bn pursuit of a majority stake in local operator Hutchison Essar.
Sarin is on a charm offensive as rival Indian bidders including Reliance argue foreign buyers should be squeezed out of a deal.
EU trade commissioner Peter Mandelson has also waded into the issue, calling for fair treatment for Vodafone.
Nath yesterday confirmed: ‘Sarin is meeting me tomorrow.’ Shares ended 2p higher at 1491/2p.
