RENEE ZELLWEGER must take the prize for being the most down-to- earth celebrity.

Despite her Hollywood A-list status, the 37-year-old actress and star of Miss Potter sat patiently with her bag as she waited for her suitcase to appear on the carousel after getting off a flight at Los Angeles airport. She was immersed in her book, Our Endangered Values: America’s Moral Crisis, by former US president Jimmy Carter. The book is an indictment on US politics and the domination of religious activists in government.

Heavy going indeed, which is why RenEe seemed nonplussed when two airport staff approached her, seemingly intent on chatting her up. Face cupped in one hand, she smiled, sent them on their way and got back to her righteous read.

Once her suitcase arrived, she lugged it all by herself to the nearby taxi stand. What a trooper.
