People Mover Offers Transportation Tips For 2007 Auto Show

DETROIT, Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ — As one of the primary modes of transportation to and from the North American International Auto Show, Detroit People Mover (DPM) can deliver visitors quickly and most importantly, safely to Cobo Center. From your car to the Show floor, here are some suggestions:

   — Pay attention to MDOT freeway messages. The signage posts real-time      ramp and travel information.   — Park close to a People Mover station. DPM stations at Grand Circus      Park, Cadillac, Broadway, or Millender Center historically have a      shorter wait time to board than the other nine remaining stations.      Spaces are available at any private or City of Detroit Municipal      Parking facility, which offer great values and are steps from several      more People Mover stations.   — When you can, use change at DPM stations.  Sometimes the longest lines      at People Mover stations are at the token machines. Rides from any of      the 13 People Mover stations are 50 cents per passenger, payable in any      combination of U.S. nickels, dimes or quarters or a DPM token. Just      step up to the faregate on the left and drop coins in on the right.      Children age five and under ride free.   — Don’t rush. The maximum travel time between two stations is two minutes      or less, with the entire loop complete in 15 minutes. Let passengers on      the trains exit before you board. DPM Transit Police and DPM staff are      there to provide help and keep the flow of traffic moving smoothly.   — Special note to families: Let’s Stay Together. The People Mover is an      automated system where movement is based upon communication between the      five trains. Holding the doors repeatedly can result in system-wide      delays. Don’t push ahead while others in your group may move at a      slower pace. Rather, wait for the next train and board together.      Another train is coming, guaranteed. Should you be separated from your      party, exit at the next station, communicate by cell phone or notify a      DPM Transit Police Officer. Moms, fold up the strollers, as adults      streaming out from the back of vehicles may not notice your child right      away.   — People Mover Trains have special wheelchair seating areas. In each      vehicle these areas look like regular seats, but are equipped with a      bar to raise seats to allow spacing for wheelchairs. If you see someone      in need, please let them have that space. The Auto Show opens at 8 a.m.      for the disabled and the People Mover opens at 7 a.m. on weekends,      6:30 a.m. weekdays. Handicapped access is currently available at all      stations except Grand Circus Park (GCP), which has stairway access      only. Passengers needing an elevator or escalator closest to GCP should      board at either the Broadway or Times Square Stations.
