Russian Watchdog Probes US Poultry in Suspected Salmonella Threat
Text of report by Russian news agency Interfax
Tyumen, 16 January: Specialists with the Tyumen Region directorate of [Russian consumer protection watchdog] Rospotrebnadzor have withdrawn from sale 825 kg of US-produced poultry meat presumably infected with salmonella.
The regional Rospotrebnadzor directorate reported on 16 January that “preliminary tests indicate that meat produced by the Tyson Foods, Inc plant in Springdale is infected with serogroup B or serogroup G [in Russian alphabetic order] salmonella”.
“At this point, legal proceedings regarding potential administrative violations have been launched against the meat suppliers. If repeat laboratory tests confirm the initial results, then the materials on these business entities will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for a decision on whether criminal cases should be opened,” the report says.
