JAKARTA, Indonesia - An Indonesian passenger train jumped its tracks Tuesday, sending a crowded rail car plunging nearly 20 feet. Five people were reported killed and more than 250 injured.
The carriage landed on its roof in a river bed surrounded by lush forests, TV footage of the accident near the Central Javanese town of Purwokerto showed.
At least two other carriages slipped off the rails but did not fall off the side of the track or turn over, said police Sgt. Sunaryro, who goes by a single name.
A 3-year-old child was among those who died, Sunaryro said, adding that most of the injuries were not serious. The carriage was packed with passengers, one injured survivor told Indonesia's Metro TV.
"It was so full, you could not walk from one end of the carriage to the other," she said in an interview from her hospital bed. "People kept pouring on whenever the train stopped." The station did not identify her by name.
The train was traveling from the town of Solo to the capital, Jakarta, Sunaryro said.
Train accidents are common on Indonesia's aging railway network, especially at crossings.
It is not uncommon for economy class carriages to carry up to 200 people.
