At least four people were killed and dozens injured in the collision of a cargo ship and a passenger hydrofoil near the Sicilian port of Messina in Italy.
All four fatalities were crew members on the hydrofoil, including the ferry's captain, the BBC reported Tuesday.
About 150 passengers were traveling from Reggio Calabria on the high-speed ferry at the time of the collision at the port entrance.
The collision caused a fire on the ferry, and some of the injured, who were taken to hospitals in Messina and Reggio Calabria, were said to be suffering burns, the BBC reported. Many of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.
Investigations into the collision have been opened by the regional prosecutor's office and transport ministry.
The Segesta Jet hydrofoil is operated by Italian state railways and the cargo ship, the Susan Borchard, is registered in Antigua.
Unconfirmed reports suggested the cargo ship cut in front of the ferry before the crash.
