School Bus Runs Off Road: Three Students Remain Hospitalized
By Jillian Ogawa, The Lexington Herald-Leader, Ky.
Jan. 18–Two students were in critical condition yesterday after their school bus crashed in Northern Kentucky.
The wreck occurred about 7:50 a.m. on U.S. 25 between Crittenden and Dry Ridge, said Nancy Howe, a spokeswoman for the Grant County school district.
The passengers were students on the way to Grant County Middle School.
The preliminary investigation shows that the bus, driven by Angelynna Young-Howe, 28, of Williamstown, was southbound on U.S. 25 and dropped off the right side of the road, said Kentucky State Police spokesman Shain Stephens.
Young overcorrected, crossed the highway and went off the left shoulder. The bus then sideswiped a utility pole.
The driver and all 17 students aboard were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center of Grant County in Williamstown to be checked, Howe said.
Four students were transferred to other hospitals. Two — one at Kentucky Children’s Hospital and one at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital — were in critical but stable condition. Another child at the Cincinnati hospital was in fair condition.
The fourth child was treated at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence and discharged.
The others were treated and discharged, Stephens said. He said he did not have the names of the hospitalized students.
The driver was taken to St. Elizabeth-South Medical Center in Edgewood for evaluation and discharged.
Young-Howe has been a full-time driver for the school district since August 2004, the district said in a news release. Another driver will cover her route until the district receives further information about her condition and the accident.
The crash remained under investigation.
