Winter Finally Gets Back on Schedule

Jan. 20–Old Man Winter may have neglected eastern Nebraska and western Iowa in December, but he’s rapidly making up for lost time.

Chuck Caracozza, a meteorologist for AccuWeather, The World-Herald’s private forecaster, said snow is on the way for the second weekend in a row.

“Since the 12th of January, we have been slipping into the kind of normal winter pattern that you expect,” Caracozza said. “This pattern will be with us for quite a while.

“You aren’t going to see much of a warm up. There is another cold blast building for the following weekend, too.”

Caracozza said a storm system building in the southwest portion of the country is currently moving up to meet a cold front dropping down from Canada.

That should result in 1 to 3 inches of snow falling in the Omaha area starting tonight and ending by midday Sunday.

“The bulk of that snow will fall on Saturday night,” Caracozza said. “Farther south, down in Lincoln, they should get 2 to 4 inches. To the north, they can expect about the same amount as will fall in Omaha.”

High temperatures for the area are expected to hover around 32 degrees for the next couple of weeks.

Lows in the midteens will continue until at least midweek, with another Arctic blast building for next weekend.

“We had gotten used to highs of 50 and in the upper 40s for a good chunk of the winter,” Caracozza said. “Now, we’re back into the normal temps for this time of year. This is more or less like winter’s supposed to be.”
