WhiteWave Foods Company Names Ellen W. Feeney Vice President of Responsible Livelihood

Posted on: Monday, 29 January 2007, 12:00 CST

WhiteWave Foods Company announced today that Ellen W. Feeney has been promoted to Vice President of Responsible Livelihood. A Colorado native, Feeney has been leading WhiteWave Foods' Responsible Livelihood programs for the past 18 months.

Responsible Livelihood is a key tenet of WhiteWave Foods' operating principles, and is defined by the company as a commitment to sustainable business practices and the belief that true success means delivering exceptional results to shareholders while simultaneously investing in communities and showing respect for the environment.

"I have long been driven by a passion for corporate social responsibility, and believe in the power of business to change the world for the better," Feeney said. "WhiteWave Foods has an incredible opportunity to make a meaningful difference in our community and in the world, while at the same time demonstrating to the business community that a company that behaves responsibly is rewarded in the marketplace by its loyal consumers."

"WhiteWave Foods has a proud tradition of social and environmental responsibility," said Joe Scalzo, President and CEO of WhiteWave Foods. "Ellen is truly passionate about both, and has been a key driver behind many of WhiteWave's initiatives and partnerships that help to sustain and improve our communities, work environment and planet."

In everything from the paper used, to the partnerships pursued, to the causes sponsored, WhiteWave Foods works to ensure that its choice honor the core principle of Responsible Livelihood. Some of the current Responsible Livelihood key initiatives include:

Powered by the Wind

Both Silk® and Horizon Organic® offset 100 percent of the electrical energy used in manufacturing their products by buying wind energy Green Tags from Bonneville Environmental Fund.

In 2006, WhiteWave Foods further expanded its support of wind by offsetting the energy used in its Broomfield, Colo. headquarters with renewable energy. These additional Green Tags, coupled with those bought by Silk and Horizon Organic, result in almost 54,000 megawatt-hours of wind energy being added back into the national grid annually. The resulting benefit is equivalent to the elimination of 35,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and is the same as taking over 6,000 cars off the road or planting more than 10,000 acres of trees each year.

For four consecutive years, WhiteWave Foods has won the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Green Power Leadership Award for its commitment to, and ongoing promotion of, renewable energy.

WhiteWave Foods has also been on the EPA list of Top 25 Green Power Partners each year since 2004 for contributions made toward the development and use of renewable energy.

Local Action

WhiteWave Foods supports and partners with organizations that share its values, some of which include:

Farm-Aid®

Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF)

The Organic Center

Community Food Share

World Initiative for Soy and Human Health (WISHH)

The Nature Conservancy

Environmentally Friendly Headquarters

The new WhiteWave Foods offices feature furniture and carpet made in part from recycled content, and the company has also implemented an on-site recycling program (Eco-Cycle's Zero Waste Services) that keeps 75 percent or more of the waste it generates out of landfills.

Engaging Employees in the Cause

WhiteWave Foods has established a Values in Action (VIA) corporate volunteer program, with a goal of making it easy and rewarding for WhiteWave Foods staff to get involved with worthwhile activities in our communities. Employees can earn points for each hour they volunteer for a non-profit organization or community group. For every hour volunteered, employee's names are entered into a prize drawing.
