KUALA LUMPUR: The number of people using public transport is on the rise, Entrepreneur and Cooperative Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said yesterday.

According to statistics from the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB), commuters using public transport increased by about 20 per cent from 2005 to 2006.

He was commenting on a report quoting the Malaysian Institute of Transport (Mitrans) that fewer people were using public transport.

“More Malaysians are opting to use public transportation, and the numbers show it. The report by Mitrans was based on a 2004 study,” he said.

He expects the number of commuters to increase in the Klang Valley with RapidKL’s new fleet of stage buses.
